Colorforms – Curatorial Statement

Sasha’s Colorforms take shape in the corner of my workspace. The installation has three parts, a grid of fifteen index cards adhered to the magnet board, objects displayed on top of the flat files and a wall piece.

The grid configuration is evidence of Sasha’s personal calendar. Made during the early days of the pandemic, these dated notecards mark time. So much time in fact, this configuration is only a sample of the larger complete set which consists of 64 index cards. The cards show images of colorful magnets coming together, falling apart, compiled again and then dispersed. This repetition plays out the transitory arrangements which are then photographed and printed on grid index cards. Dates are penciled on the top of each notecard. These read as daily records and marks time passing. It makes me wonder, how does an artist fill their time?

On the flat file, three paper objects are displayed. Folded boxes, repurposed and made into magical packages. Surprises await inside the handmade constructions of colorful shapes, taped and bunched together. So intricate and delicate, it makes me want to hold my breath when releasing them from their shells.

Next to the paper sculptures, two plastic boxes of custom magnets are laid out to be used by the viewer. They refer back to the grid. The plastic boxes have compartments which hold odd sized geometric magnetic strips. They invite the audience to play their own game of construction.

On the wall hangs an orange envelope, it has been recycled from old darkroom paper but now serves as the outer layer of this piece. The inner layer is a sheet of black darkroom paper that has been sliced. Geometric shapes have been removed to reveal white stripes. This black piece is what first made me think of my old childhood game, Colorforms. After removing the vinyl characters there remained black outlines. As with the old game, these shapes take on a life of their own.
