A Feel For The Place – Curatorial Statement
The Nancy Willard And Eric Lindbloom Archives is pleased to announce its inaugural online exhibition, A Feel For The Place, opening on Saturday, September 10th.
A Feel For The Place features the work of six photographers: Sara Adriani, Christine Callahan, Jesus Emmanuel, Sadia Rashid, Joanne Valeo and Arecis Tiburcio Zane, and is curated by our director, Sasha Louis Bush.
A Feel For The Place celebrates both the one year anniversary and recent closing of The Nancy Willard And Eric Lindbloom Artist-Run Project Space, in Poughkeepsie, New York, in July of 2022.
Sit with Nancy’s ‘creatures’ as she referred to them, placed in the front yard and throughout the house. Notice the golden star with a burgundy dress climbing a wooden ladder made of thin branches. Enjoy the late afternoon sun as it illuminates Nancy’s mural, painted on the peach colored walls that lead up to the second floor. With a broad range of pastel colors, Nancy’s creation depicts a row of houses, neatly stacked, one next to the other, in angular, geometrical squares and rectangles. Observe the humming energy of Eric’s darkroom, overflowing with boxes of negatives, scrawled notes and prints tacked to the black-and-white checkered walls.
A Feel For The Place pairs pictures made by recent high school and college graduates alongside long-time practitioners of photography in an intergenerational conversation. Collectively, these six artists observe Nancy and Eric’s home, the site of our Project Space, with startling candor, celebrating both artists’ individual artistic legacies and their lives together. Reflecting Nancy and Eric’s spirit of communal generosity, these photographs observe our Project Space as it has changed, grown, and supported dozens of artists throughout the year.
